will drive a truck or trailer from Norfolk early afternoon June 29th
with all of our bikes loaded up with our equipment and ready to ride.
The rest of the participants will drive from
Norfolk
to Harper's Ferry, WVa. At Harper's Ferry, we'll board the 5:06pm
Amtrak train to
Cumberland
,
MD
, where it arrives at approximately 7:10pm. We will then walk 6
blocks from the train station to the trailhead where we'll meet up with
our bikes and gear. We'll then pedal about 9.1 miles to our first
campsite at either Evitts Creek or
Iron
Mountain
. On Monday, we’ll bike 34.5 miles to a nice campground at Little
Orleans; On Tuesday, we’ll bike 28.5 miles and camp at
Fort
Frederick
State Park
, stopping in Hancock MD for lunch.
Fort
Frederick

remaining 9 miles to Harper's
Ferry

where we’ll load up our cars and head home.
Daily activities will include cycling, swimming in the Potomac
River, visiting and eating/snacking in quaint and interesting towns
located along the bike path, lively and interesting conversations with
fellow cyclers, and camping out each night at campgrounds located along
the bike path. You'll see historic canal locks and lock-keepers’
cabins, a small waterfall, and the best-preserved Civil War battlefield
at Antietam (
Sharpsburg
). For the Scouts, this is an excellent chance to earn the Cycling
Merit Badge, and the spectacular set of C&O Canal Historic Trail
Patches! For those who have the Cycling Merit Badge, this
trip could pass one of the requirements for the Camping Merit Badge.
This will be a spectacular trip which is not particularly arduous;
however, proper preparation is strongly recommended. Prior to the

on the trail, and general tips and tricks to help maximize your
