On July 19, 2002 eleven scouters from Troop 53 experienced the challenge of Philmont Scout Ranch. Beautiful blue skies and dry desert heat greeted the crew as they checked into base camp and found their temporary lodging on the trail bound side of tent city, a 100 acre sea of wall to wall two-man tents. The crew's designation was 719D.

The crew covered about 85 miles of trail on foot packing everything they needed on their backs. They saw a bear, many deer, turkeys, chipmunks, birds of all kinds; they met nice people everywhere and more importantly, had the opportunity to experience the magic of Philmont.
