Bristlecone Leadership Camp (Brownsea or White Stag in other councils) Leaders are made, not born. This one-week training program is designed to build leadership and communication skills necessary to lead a quality program in Boy Scouts or Venturing. This is an intense program that leads young men and women through numerous activities and learning exercises to discover their leadership skills and make them better.
Den Chief Training Cub Scouts do not magically become Boy Scouts. They make the transition because they enjoy the program, and have established relationships they want to continue. As a Boy Scout, you can work with a Den Leader and their den to provide a quality Cub Scout program and serve as a Boy Scout role model to cubs. This 1-day training program is design to train Den Chiefs in their responsibilities, how to work with cubs, how to work with Den Leaders, and how to create fun and excitement in den meetings. It is strongly suggested that the Den Leader attend with the Den Chief to begin developing leadership teamwork.

Organization Adult Leadership Training Fast Start Training Fast Start is a program designed to help you get up and running as a Boy Scout leader. You'll find out about the Boy Scout program and the specific responsibilities of your job. Boy Scout Fast Start Training is available on videotape from your district training staff (call the Scout Service Center at 408-280-5088).
Basic Leader Training New Leader Essentials New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers—Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders—take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once. The training session lasts 90 minutes.
Leader Specific TrainingOnce a volunteer has a solid overview of the BSA's values-based program, he or she can begin training for a specific Scouting position through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies. For Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, the training lasts 7.5 hours.
Outdoor Leadership TrainingThe last training segment covers basic outdoor skills and knowledge. Adults spend the weekend serving in a patrol while learning and passing all of the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class. The session begins Friday evening and lasts through Sunday noon.
Woodbadge is advanced training for Boy Scout leaders. The course spans three full weekends as well as meetings in between. Requires completion of Boy Scout Leader Training. For more information regarding Woodbadge Training, go to the Woodbadge website for schedules, details and registration. Additional Training There's lots more training available to help you as a Boy Scout leader. You can take the additional training anytime! Roundtable - Groups of Boy Scout leaders meet every month to discuss ideas, share new resources, and solve problems. Get in on the fun and learning. Troop Committee Training - This is a new half-day course offered to all Boy Scout leaders, but designed specifically for the committee members. The course provides a solid overview of the Boy Scout program, the role of the committee, different jobs in the committee, and strategies for overseeing a top quality troop. Watch for course schedules beginning Summer 2002! High Adventure - A good Scouting program requires outdoor activities that provide challenge and adventure. It's the reason boys come to Scouting. As a Scouting leader, you need to be prepared to deal with the challenges high adventure presents. Merit Badge Counselor One way just about every adult can participate in the Boy Scout program is to serve as a merit badge counselor. Boys can adopt lifelong hobbies or choose career paths based on involvement in a merit badge. A one-evening course is required before you can begin to work with the Scouts on their merit badges. Provides overview of the merit badge program, your role as a counselor, and the standards for approving the Scout's work. Merit Badge Counselor Application. Youth Protection Program - All adult leaders should consider attending the Youth Protection Program to ensure that they are up to date on the rules associated with working with youth and creating a safe scouting environment. In 2003, at least one Leader trained in Youth Protection is required for Tour Permit Authorization. Training is 90 minutes and certification is good for two years.
